The perfect name for your dog

Der perfekte Name für deinen Hund

When a dog moves in, most people ask themselves quite quickly what name their future four-legged friend should have. Often the puppies already have a name when they come from the breeder, but since hardly any puppy listens to his name at first, you can give him a new one without hesitation. And now it becomes tricky! There are infinitely many dog names and your imagination has practically no limits, you are literally spoilt for choice. To make the decision a little easier for you, we have a few tips for you:

1. Clarity

As sweet as the two names "Hanni" and "Nanni" sound together, you will hardly be able to call them separately - they just sound too similar. The same problem arises, the father is called "Henny" and you call your dog "Benni". You should also be careful with dog names that resemble a command for for example "Pitt" sounds similar to "Sit!". With such names you confuse your dog unnecessarily and make it more difficult for both of you to execute the commands correctly.

2. Short dog names

Experts advise not to give dogs a name longer than 2 syllables for several reasons. Dogs can learn short names faster than long or complicated names. In everyday life, each syllable is often a hindrance - for example, when in a tricky situation, every second is important. By the time you have called the name "An-na-ma-ri-a", your dog may already have disappeared in the park or is eating something poisonous. Short names can also be called with much more emphasis and the probability of getting a promise is low.

3. Funny dog names

The name will accompany your dog throughout his life and is therefore probably the word he will hear most often. It will also become one of your most frequently used words, so the name should suit you both. Also be aware that you will be calling the name often and loudly in public and not only at home in your own four walls. Some people might feel uncomfortable calling the little Chihuahua "Brutus", as it will probably cause some laughter and others might not mind. How "funny" the name will be in the end is up to everyone, as long as you and your dog feel comfortable with it.

Can I change my dogs name afterwards?

If you get an older dog, e.g. from the animal shelter, it usually has a name that it has gotten used to for several years. To change this name is difficult and should only be done if it is unavoidable. One possibility is to add something to the original name. For example, you could add "Bella" to the name "Anna". So "Anna" suddenly becomes "Annabella". If the dog has got used to the name, only "Bella" can be called bit by bit. Another possibility would be to find a new name that sounds similar to the old name. So "Hanni" becomes then "Nanni" and from "Dicky" a "Micky".
